Frequently asked questions.
How is John F. Barnes' MFR different from regular massage or physical therapy?
Unlike traditional massage or PT, Barnes-style Myofascial Release uses gentle, sustained pressure without oil or gliding strokes. It targets the fascial system—not just muscles or joints—and works in partnership with your body's natural healing process. The goal is long-lasting change rather than temporary relief.
Can Myofascial Release help after an injury or surgery?
Yes. MFR is especially effective for treating pain, tightness, and compensation patterns that linger after injury, sprains, fractures, or surgery. By releasing restrictions in the fascia, MFR can:
Improve range of motion
Reduce inflammation and stiffness
Ease nerve compression
Support tissue repair and scar integration
Many clients find it helps them recover when other therapies plateau.
Is MFR safe during pregnancy?
Absolutely. MFR can be safely adapted for all trimesters. It helps with:
Pelvic and back pain
Round ligament and rib discomfort
Sciatica
Postural changes
Birth preparation by easing fascial tension around the pelvis and diaphragm
As a prenatal-trained therapist and doula, I ensure that each session is tailored to your body’s needs and comfort level.
How does MFR support postpartum healing?
After birth, the body is recovering from profound structural shifts. MFR can support:
Cesarean or perineal scar release
Pelvic floor balance
Diastasis recti recovery
Neck, shoulder, and back tension from nursing or babywearing
Emotional release from birth trauma
It's gentle, grounding, and deeply restorative.
What can MFR do for infants and babies?
Babies have fascia too! MFR can help with:
Tongue/lip tie tension (pre/post-release)
Torticollis or head preference
Breastfeeding challenges
Birth trauma (from fast, long, or instrument-assisted deliveries)
Sleep or digestive concerns
Sessions are brief, soothing, and guided entirely by baby’s cues. Many parents report positive changes in latch, comfort, and relaxation after just one session.
How many sessions will I or my child need?
Every body is different. Some clients feel significant improvement in 1–3 sessions, while others benefit from a series of visits depending on the complexity of their issue. We’ll reassess together as we go and create a plan that works for your goals.
What should I wear or bring to my session?
Wear soft, flexible clothing like yoga pants, shorts, or a tank top. No jeans, zippers, or thick seams. Babies may be treated in a onesie or diaper. Please bring anything your child needs to feel safe and calm—including you!
